Welcome to my Blog!

I'm Lauren, a Boulder, Colorado portrait photographer.

The last several years of my life have been marked by a little bit of serendipity.  After bouncing around the country (and the world), three years ago I moved to Boulder on a whim.  I planned to stay for just a summer, but the sunny Boulder weather, abundant hiking, and delicious micro-brews won me over immediately. Meeting my now-husband, Tony, in a local margarita bar also provided pretty good motivation to stay put.  Last year while planning our wedding, I looked at hundreds of wedding photography websites.  Six months after the wedding,  I found myself still looking at those websites, investing in a fancy camera, taking photography classes, and now starting this blog.

Right now I am still learning how to take good photos and building my portfolio. I am not accepting any paying clients.  However, if you're interested in having me take some pictures, shoot me an email.

I hope you enjoy the website!

I can’t believe this week is almost over.  I’m trying to post at least twice a week, so I’d better get crackin.  Last weekend was forecast for all rain all the time, but luckily, the sun came out on Sunday, and we met friends for drinks and conversation.  Of course I got in some picture-taking as well.   The *best* part about not being a true professional and getting paid for my work?  I can drink all the mojitos I want!  I am much better at bar sports (pool, darts) when I drink….I wonder if the same holds true for photography?

I’ve been friends with Gretchen and Brian for a couple years now.  Tony and I were skiing with them in Steamboat Springs the day they got engaged, so I always have a soft spot in my heart for them. They had a wonderful New England fall wedding in 2007, and now they are parents to six month old JD.

So…there are magical flower elves in Boulder.  Did you notice the gorgeous tulips in the shots above?  They weren’t there the other day.  I SWEAR that someone comes out at night and replants all the flower beds with flowers in full bloom.  It’s like magic - one day there are short blue flowers and the next day there are tall red flowers.  They never seem to get shrivel-y and faded either,  they constantly look shine-y and new.

JD makes the best faces.  He’s one of the most expressive babies I’ve ever seen.

I may get yelled at  for posting this next one, but I can’t help it.  baby torture!

brianandgretchen

You’ve seen this wall before.

Here are some more of the happy family. I’m not sure that I love the texture on this next one.  It’s something I’m playing with.  Any thoughts?

I really like happy baby flying through air pictures.

Thanks guys.  I can’t wait to hang out again!

May 8, 2009 - 6:31 pm Katie - you just keep getting better and better...and that baby is absurdly cute!

June 8, 2009 - 11:46 am MCH - Great photo's. But ..... you said to want to post at least twice a week, it's june..... where are you? Would love to see more work!

the lucky one

the lucky one - that’s me.  Seven months ago I was lucky enough to marry this man.

tony

Not only is he damn sexy, but he’s also brilliant.

October 4th we were married at Devil’s Thumb Ranch, in the mountains of Tabernash, Colorado.  It was a wonderful weekend and I was so grateful that so many of our friends could make the trip and spend time with us up there.  We love spending time there, so a couple weeks ago we headed back up to Devil’s Thumb for a romantical relaxing weekend and I took lots of pictures of the ranch in winter.

This was the view from our room.

I love the decorations at the ranch - very rustic and western chic - not at all like a typical hotel.     There aren’t any televisions in the rooms, so you’re forced to do one of the many activities at the ranch.  In our various trips up there, we’ve been downhill skiing (at nearby Winter Park), cross-country skiing, horseback riding, fly-fishing, hiking, spa’ing, swimming and hot-tubbing, mountain biking,  game-room playing, fire sitting, and wine drinking. There is so much to do, but its all so relaxing.  It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

We had a delicious dinner at the Ranch House Restaurant (thank you Jennifer for the free champagne!).  I played with the menu, and took this ring shot (in a very dimly lit room), 7 months on.

It was a wonderfully warm and sunny weekend to be skiing.  Here are some shots from our route - lots of really cool barns scattered all over their 4000 acres.

This was just one in the many wonderful trips I’ve had since meeting the-most-wonderful-husband-in-the-world. I can’t wait for all the rest of adventures we’ll have together.  Happy seven month anniversary Tony.  I loves.

May 4, 2009 - 6:17 pm Tony Casson - This post is wonderful and the pictures are amazing just like the last 7 months (and two years before) have been but there is only one thing wrong with it - I am the lucky one.

May 4, 2009 - 7:57 pm Alyssa - ooh, I don't love Tony as much as you do :-), but I share your feelings on Devil's Thumb - we had such a great time at the wedding. Gorgeous pics - especially love the top b&w.

May 5, 2009 - 12:21 pm Courtney - lauren, what beautiful photographs. they seem to capture a sense of timelessness. and i love your wistful romanticism. spread the love :-)

Jon, Barb, and Juliette; Josh and Kana

Last weekend was full of picture taking.  Before we went to the farm, we met up with some friends in downtown Boulder.  When I decided that I wanted to actively pursue photography,  I emailed a few local friends and asked begged and pleaded with them if I could please practice on their families.  Although I think I’m pretty good for someone who has only been taking pictures for a month, I’m definitely not ready to accept actual paying clients, so my friends must act as my guinea pigs.

Fortunately, I have very patient (and photogenic) friends, so hopefully you’ll see their shining faces gracing this blog for several months to come.  Unfortunately, the weather in Boulder wasn’t too great on Saturday, so we didn’t get to spend too much time playing.

Jon and Barb kindly agreed to be my subjects this weekend. I first met both of them when I moved to Boulder a couple years ago, and I’m really lucky that I can call them friends. They are both just really cool people who are passionate about life and each other.   Jon’s newly married brother Josh was also in town for the weekend, with his new wife Kana.  It was a real family affair.

Josh and Kana were so sweet with each other.

I love this shot, you can’t tell whether she’s going to kiss him, or whisper sweet nothings in his ear.

There are some really cool walls in Boulder.

Juliette is Jon and Barb’s daughter.  She’s such a pretty girl, and you can definitely tell her how much her parents adore her.

Only a little over a year old, and she’s already fierce.

One of the things that I love about Jon and Barb is that they really show how you can have children, and yet still maintain a life outside of being parents.  One of my favorites from the day, here they are proving that the romance doesn’t die.

Thanks guys, for being my guinea pigs.  I can’t wait til we can get outside in some nice weather and shoot!

April 30, 2009 - 11:17 pm Jenna - Even though it's strange to start charging people out of nowhere (I mean, how do you decide what to charge? It's definitely not easy), I think it's important to remember that people are choosing to pay you based on your previous work. So I think it's definitely important to shoot for free for a little while to build up your portfolio, but after you have a certain amount of work built up, go ahead and set some prices and see who is willing to pay that much. Your market value is really a combination of what you think you are worth, and what your clients are willing to pay for your services. Don't be afraid to let those people book who love your work and would like to hang some of it on their wall.

May 6, 2009 - 1:20 am Anna Mae - I think these photos are great for a person with only one month of experience. :)

we own a cow!

….or at least, part of a cow.  a very small part.

cow

(I’m not sure if this is her or the part, but she’s pretty.)

During the summer we’re fortunate enough to get most of our groceries from the local farmer’s market, and Windsor Dairy is one of the market regulars. We love their cheeses, and have been anxious to try their other dairy products.  It’s not as easy as it sounds, though, because the dairy is a raw milk dairy, and in Colorado, as in many states, it is illegal to buy or sell raw milk.  What’s a law-abiding raw milk craving girl to do?  Buy part of the cow, of course!  If you own the cow you can drink the milk, so Windsor allows people to become members and purchase cow shares.  So on Saturday, after wandering around Boulder doing a photo shoot for some friends (more on that in my next post),  the husband and I ventured up to the Windsor Dairy farm, about an hour north of Boulder. Why would we go to all this hassle, instead of just going to the store and getting some quick and easy skim milk?  Some people think that unpasteurized milk is loads better for you (chock full of proteins and vitamins and omega-6 fatty acids) than pasteurized milk, and we wanted to try it ourselves to see.   Here’s what our milk looked like (we also bought raw butter, raw cottage cheese, and raw mozzarella)

milk

Since you’re buying a part of a cow,  Windsor Dairy strongly recommends that you take a tour of the farm and learn about where your milk comes from and how it is made.  This alone was worth the trip. A couple photos from our tour:

They also raise chickens at the farm.  Ever wonder where the term “hen-pecked” comes from?  Turns out female chickens (the hens) like to swarm around the male rooster and make sure he’s clean by picking all out bugs and dirt off him, etc. It must be a tough life being a rooster.  Check it out:

This young lady keeps everyone in line.  She lost a leg in a car accident, but she still can run faster than I can.

dog

Abigail is a bit of a trouble maker.  Her mother couldn’t feed her when she was born, so she has been bottle fed since birth.  She likes to eat the chicken feed and pretend she knows how to drive a tractor.

abigail

The baby cows hang out in their own separate area. Here they are all lined up and chomping on grass.  All of the cows at the dairy are grass fed.

It was fantastic being being able to see where exactly where our dairy products will come from, and to meet the people who will care for the animals producing them.  We had a wonderful time touring the farm and hanging out with the cows.  To learn more about the farm and sustainable agriculture, check out Windsor Dairy.

April 26, 2009 - 2:39 am Anna Mae - This was such a cute post! I loved learning about how you can have your own cow (sort of). I wish they had places like this in or near Los Angeles. I would totally go and buy a share. So I have to ask, how does the raw milk taste?!

April 26, 2009 - 7:46 am Karen - That was fascinating. I bet the raw mozzarella is awesome My favorite picture is the third in the set, the line of the fence with the cows sticking their heads out to feed.

April 26, 2009 - 10:10 am lauren - Anna Mae, it's delicious! The taste varies a lot by type of cow, season, what they are fed, etc. Apparently spring milk is much creamier than winter milk, so what we had last night was pretty creamy. In both the butter and the milk, I also found a faint taste of fresh grass, it gives it a nice light kick.

April 26, 2009 - 10:15 am Tony - It's great stuff. This farm is really ambitious in their plans for sustainable agriculture and we love being able to be a shareholder. The last photo of the cows is my favorite. My wife has an amazing eye for composition.

April 28, 2009 - 1:06 am MCH - I just really love your style in picture taking.

April 28, 2009 - 9:33 pm Alyssa - Love the baby cows! What a great place, and fantastic pictures.

May 19, 2009 - 1:16 pm Tasha - I owned at least 25 heifers in my life and showed and raised them. My grandparents own a dairy, and to have the raw milk is wonderful. I'm so jealous that you at least own a "cow share", I would give anything to do some of the farm work again. My favorite images is of the shallow depth of field while the cattle are at their feeders.

my first post

Welcome!  This is the beginning of my foray into both blogging and photography.  I promise that in the coming weeks I will be adding more features and posts, so make sure to put this blog in your rss feed.  Also check out the “About Me” section if you want to know who I am and why I’m doing this.

A couple weeks ago my husband Tony and I went to Washington DC to visit our new baby niece Lyra.  She is absolutely adorable - I am pretty sure she takes after her aunt Lauren.   Although it’s difficult to plan around the schedule of a six-week old, I managed to get in some nice photos of my brother Cameron, my sister in law Eleanor, and the aforementioned perfect niece, their daughter Lyra.  We went outside to their local park on a lovely DC spring day.  Here is one of my favorites (you can see it in the blog header too).  The light was nice and golden and glow-y for this shot.

The Family

I did manage to get a few good close-up pictures of Lyra as well.   Let’s hope she keeps those gorgeous blue eyes.  I think my favorite part of this photo is the little drool bubbles in her mouth - so cute!

The Niece

We did more than just take pictures, though.  I have to admit, although I live in Boulder and do my best to eat healthy and exercise, I love me some good cupcakes.  While we were in DC, we stopped in Georgetown and got a couple dozen few cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake.  I wish I had managed to take some pictures of the cupcakes, but if you’re in DC check them out.  Here’s a shot I grabbed as we were walking towards the (really long) line for cupcakes.   Don’t they make parenting look easy - just grab the baby and go!

camtest1

Although the weekend was all about niece-visiting, I would be remiss if I didn’t post at least one picture of my parents.   They live in Ohio, but drove down for the weekend to see everyone.   I think my mom spends most of her time in sweat pants (sorry mom!) so it was nice to get some pictures of her dressed up and fancy.   I love the emotion in this picture.

The Parents

That’s it for now!  Please comment and check back regularly.

April 22, 2009 - 5:09 pm MCH - Hi Lauren, Welcome to you!! I am looking forward to your pictures. For now, I just love that one of your mom and dad. The emotion yes, but also the atmosphere around the house, very local and inviting!
